Review of The Bosun
April 2nd, 2008

Last Sunday we weren’t really in the humour for cooking and fancied heading out en famille for some late lunch. We wanted something more than fastfood but with 5 young kids haute cuisine isn’t often an option. So off we headed to The Bosun pub in Monkstown. The location of this pub/restaurant is great, overlooking the harbour in Monkstown with a carpark just opposite. The atmosphere in the bar very friendly and relaxed. Fortunately the big table to the rear of the pub was free so the 5 kids, myself and Conor made a beeline for it.
The 6, 4 and 2 year old ordered lasagne whilst the 8 year old ordered fish. All came accompanied by chips which unusually our children aren’t hugely fond of. They’re not great potato eaters in any shape or form. What I did like about The Bosun children’s food options was that apart from the usual dreadful nuggets/chips offerings, they also offered half portions of most of the adult dishes. This suited ours better. The plates of lasagne were almost licked clean. Without exception, our children loved the dish, with Fionn the 2 year old asking for more.

Oscar ate all his breaded sole too, it was a fair size and he thought it tasted good.

The afternoon/evening bar menu is quite extensive, with a good handful of fish dishes which we like. Both myself and Conor went with the cod special of the day:

The fish tasted great but the side salad really let the whole dish down. Some of the lettuce leaves had started going brown around the edges and it didn’t taste very good. I didn’t like the dressing which was poured on top of it.
3 glasses of milk, 1 juice, 1 coke and a sparkling water and the bill came to €71. The waiting staff couldn’t be faulted, service was efficient and with a smile. It is somewhere we will return to as there is always a good atmosphere in the place and it is somewhere that is very family friendly.
