Things that remind me of my Da
October 20th, 2007
- Prawn cocktail or more specifically Marie Rose sauce: he had perfected his own version which was served on Christmas day and whenever else he felt like it and it was the business.
- Long walks.
- Clunt: his favourite derisory term.
- “He’s a wrong one”: his second favourite derisory statement.
- “It’s in the sand”.
- Being busy and the ability and compulsion to get together a possé to do any job.
- Septic tanks: More specifically, the annual Christmas furoré over who blocked the septic tank
- Blackcurrants.
- Mowing the garden
- Local and not so local history, I remember being let stay up late and watching a series about Henry the VIII and his wives when I was aged 10 or so with him. Now any mention of the tutors reminds me of this.
- Stubborness and single mindedness, which I’ve probably inherited and definitely see in myself from time to time.
- Humour and craic, which I hope I’ve inherited.
Gawd I miss him.

Gawd, you Clunt, you’ve made me cry now. The Marie Rose sauce thing got me - I remember him making it for us once - like he’d invented the whole thing himself and the precision!!! And let’s face it, septic tanks in this part of the country have never been the same LOL

Yeah, you’re right, the whole “ownership” of Marie Rose sauce has made me smile!
It’s bizarre sometimes that something out of the blue can remind me of him and not just when I’m up home.
Golf and especially golf on the telly is another one.

Plus though little sis doesn’t say “it’s in the locker” too much - it always is - another family trait?
