Swimming in the sea
Last Sunday I went swimming in the sea for the first time in years. It was a gorgeous day here and we were on the nearby beach before midday, I couldn’t resist it.
I’m an enthusiastic rather than an accomplished swimmer, I still haven’t mastered putting my face in the water when doing the forward crawl. But I really love being in the water, I love feeling weightless and treading water. This was especially true when I was pregnant and reached my “Jabba the hut” stage. When pregnant with Oscar, I did pregnancy aqua aerobics in Mount Merrion a few times a week. It was such a relief as my poor body had gotten so big and I ached. On the other pregnancies, it was just a joy to get to a swimming pool and loll around.
But you really can’t beat the sea. Although Inchydoney’s pumped sea water swimming pool comes very close. The water was crystal clear and just low waves on Sunday. Fionn, up until this, as result of the crap summer weather we’ve had, had just been used to swimming in the pool, so the whole wave and ocean thing was a bit scary initially for him. But thankfully he got used to it and was happy to jump around by the end of the day. Oscar and Conor had great craic with the buggy board. Sibéal was way too adventurous, no fear, heading out into the sea to her armpits. Oisín was happier to splash around the shore and pretend he was a dog. Síofra just crawled around and ate sand.
A couple of hours and the tide had come in so far that there wasn’t too much of beach left, we were all wrecked so headed home happy.
