Review of www.bookdepository.co.uk

Great online bookstore with free delivery, editor’s blog and twitter updates. I love it!

I came across this website many months ago and have used it frequently since. I had gotten annoyed with amazon.co.uk’s gouging shipping charges and so had gone in search of an alternative.
The site is really easy to use, has the usual categories to browse through, and the usual search facilities and reviews that you’d expect on an online bookstore these days. In addition it has interviews and news. I think the editor’s blog is a great idea and I also love the twitter updates.
There is free delivery so no additional shipping charges at the end of your shop which is excellent.
They also give you the option of buying from amazon so you can compare prices and also handy if they’re out of stock.

I have found most books cost less here and especially when amazon’s shipping charge is included.
Definitely recommend for easy book purchase at reasonable prices.

I love this site! Use it all the time… it’s great how you can just order one book at a time too!
Amazon is a disgrace. Their warehouse is now in Dublin, yet UK people get free shipping after 15 and we don’t!? It’s a disgrace and I’ve tried to get in touch with someone, but apparently no one in customer service can discuss shipping charges or put me in contact with someone who can. Ridiculous!!!

Hey Deborah,
Thats brutal customer service. Its obvious they dont really give a crap.
Its been ages since I’ve bought anything off Amazon, too many half read books lying around the house at the moment. It would take a week away on my own to catch up.
Needed to buy some travel guides and so was on bookdepository site. The books in question were much cheaper than on amazon. It reminded me why I like the site and so I wrote the review.

I’m a bit of an Amazon junkie (witness all my unread cookery books!), but I’ll definitely be checking this crowd out. Thanks.

Do, you may want to follow the twitter feed too.

They recently had a book giveaway for bloggers too.

I frequently use book depository, one thing I really like about them is that they bother to respond to support request generally the same working day.

This is the only place I will buy books from off the internet. Cheap prices, excellent packaging and a company that I trust, they also don’t bombard you with 20 items of junk mai 4 times a week.
I would also reccomend a website called http://www.readitswapit.co.uk – this is not to buy new books but you list all of the books that you have read (and more than likely won’t read again) and you swap them with other people. There is no charge to join and you just pay for P&P of the books.

Hi Karen,
Agree the lack of spam is also an advantage!
Will look into that other website, up till now, have jsut been dumping all my read books at the local charity shop. Thanks.

Dear all,
just to let you know to be careful when ordering books from bookdepositoryco.uk. It has some cheep offers but you may never get your books even though your card will be be charged. In my case, after 3 months waiting and many mails I was simply ignored from them. Bad way to sell books.
Best…

Sorry to hear you’d a bad experience with the bookdepository, Igor.
Thankfully, all of my book purchases with them have gone smoothly and I’ve had no hassle whatsoever.

I have very good experiences with the bookdepository. I got a book and it was in a very bad condition and I have sent them an e-mail and they have refund me in full and I got a new book for free! They have responded me in ten minutes after I have send them the e-mail. Delivery is very fast. I always have ordered my books by Amazon, but now it’s bookdepository.

Avoid bookdepository now that they’ve changed their website (02/13/2009) while INCREASING their prices by 10-30% overnight!!!

I can confirm the terrific escalation of prices in february 2009. I was a huge fan of bookdepository, but their prices are really outrageous now. As a result, I will back to Amazon.co.uk.

After reading reviews for The Book Depository in this blog and others websites I decided to take the risk and ordering from there. Although I had read some very bad reviews (and many good ones) my experience was EXCELLENT. I live in Chile (South America) and the books arrived in a little over a week which is a very decent time considering they came via regular mail.
Three of the books I ordered were listed for shipping within 24-hour and the fourth one for dispatch within 72 hours. To avoid the latter from slowing the other 3 I placed a separate order for it. But although it was shipped later I’m happy to say that all the books arrived at the same time.
Each book was packed separately in a bubble mailer and they arrived in perfect conditions (all of them were paperbacks). I admit that this kind packing could be too fragile for hardcovers or oversized book but for paperbacks worked fine.
The only negative comment I have is that I never received an e-mail notifying me that my order had been placed or shipped. I had to check their website until my orders showed as “Dispatched”. Other than that, my experience was VERY SATISFACTORY.
My advice for those hesitating to use this website is trying with one inexpensive book first and or separate your purchase in different orders.

Hi Andrea,
They send the hardcovers in a good packing, not too fragile. That’s a good thing.

I love BookDepository’s free worldwide shipping. I used to buy from Amazon but when I paid for delivery to my country, the order price DOUBLED. Basically I had to look at book price and double it to see how much it would cost. BD saves me a lot of money

I also ordered some books from BookDepository for the first time on October 2010.
At early November, and while my books never arrived, they said that a full refund of 137.5 euros will appear in my account shortly.
Shortly became FOREVER, so at January 10 of 2011 after I managed to find aphone number of them at last(!!!),some representative called Lu reassured me that they would send a cheque shortly (AGAIN!).
Then on February 17 after I wrote them that if I don’t get my cheque until the 25th, everyone on the web would hear my story, they replied that they would immediately contact their accounting department in order to send the cheque ….guess again….SHORTLY!
I really hope they will clear my issue eventually and save me from 137.5 euros of expenditure, which -believe me- in Greece especially is a large amount of money!

I would also like to add problems I have had with book depository. In April I ordered a book from them as it was currently out of stock on Amazon.
I followed the updates with the tracking number and after a few days it said the item had been shipped. Great I thought – I’ll soon have my book. 20 days later and still nothing – so I emailed them explaining that I had received nothing and got a quick reply stating that they would send replacement copy.
Great I thought once again – packages do get lost sometimes. However, after about another two weeks still nothing. This time I asked them for a refund and this is what I got a few days later. Unfortunately the situation didn’t end there.
I paid for the book using a UK based account – the book cost 11.86 Euros – however my account was debited for 9.86 pounds plus 1 pound “internaitonal fee” Which strangely adds up to 11.86 – the same price of the book but in pounds.
Anyway, the refund I recieved was 9.96 pounds with no fee refunded. So basically the book was priced in Euros, they charged me the same amount in pounds and refunded me less – essentially stealing my money and wasting my time.
Not a lot and certainly not as much as some people here, but still it’s my money.
I’ve emailed them but they have so far they have fobbed me off with text book answers. I don’t think I’ll be bothering to follow it up anymore as it’s not worth the time.
I will though never use them again and never recommend another person to buy from them.
I will be sticking with Amazon (which also is not perfect by anymeans) but at least I get what I order.(It’s good that they now deliver for free using DHL) It’s a shame as I work in education and often order books so they have surely lost a few sales.
BUYER BEWARE! Avoid BookDepository.co.uk
Don’t take down this post even if you get things sorted out. It is a valuable resource to any consumer who is researching the company that they buy products from.

Transaction fees are charged by banks – not the retailer – you need to speak to your bank Stephen.
I use BD all the time, and have never had a problem. I’m in Germany at the moment, you just change your currency setting to Euros / GBP as appropriate – easy peasy!

two of the 6 books that i order arrived today, one of them was the complete wrong book, its a POCKET SIZE BOOK, and I never ordered a pocket size book!!! When someone orders a book they expect to be in the normal size, NOT A LITTLE BOOK WITH A REDUCED STORY! Pocket size books are for people that don’t want to read!!!!! and STEPHEN KING DOES NOT WRITE POCKET SIZE BOOKS, as we all know, the books are always very big!
Now im thinking that the reason that the prices are low is because they are not the real versions of the books, but a SMALL POCKET VERSION! that no one in their right mind wants to read it!!!
People go there to by real books, and they sell them SMALL PIECES OF C***!
Shouldn’t they say ON THE SITE just next to the book that is a POCKET SIZE BOOK, SO PEOPLE CAN CHOOSE THE RIGHT BOOK FOR THEM??????!!!!!
IM REALLY DESAPPOINTED WITH THIS STORE!!!
NOW I HAVE CONTECTED THEM, and ask what they are going to do about this! Are they going to help and give me the right books or should I throw this pieces of crap in to the garbage and buy the real books from a real store!
I have 76 books in my wishlist, can any of you imagine if I hand buy a lot more books, like I wanted??!!! I just thought that I should wait to see if the books would come in the right condition and then by more.
NOW I DON’T THINK THAT I AM GOING TO BUY ANYMORE BOOKS FROM THEM.
Waiting to see if they will do anything about this! If they help me I will buy more books from them, if not, NEVER AGAIN!!
Im so disappointed that none of you can imagine!!!
I HATE POCKET BOOKS!THE BOOK IS JUST A LITTLE BIT BIGGER THAN A IPHONE!
Will come back to say something about this, and to see what they do!
