Helping Hercules by Francesca Simon

Greek myths with a twist as Susan travels back in time.

Oscar has been a fan of the Horrid Henry books for a few years, so I was delighted when I spotted this book by the same author.

He initially was a bit put off by the Greek names but persevered and now loves it. Its  a fabulous way to introduce him to Greek mythology as is the story of Susan a stroppy, grumpy kid from London with an older sister and younger brother who hates doing household chores, practising her violin and is scared to start horse riding.

She re-discovers a coin her uncle has given her and notices it is a bit strange as is not any she can identify from her reference book. She rubs it and makes a wish and so starts her time travel to ancient Greece. There, on different visits, she encounters Hercules, Pegasus, Paris, Midas, Medusa and various other characters.

Its funny and entertaining as she plays her part in the well known Greek adventures. Theres a pronounciation guide in the back of the book and illustrations are provided by Tony Ross who also does the horrid henry books.

Oscar is really enjoying it and I must say I found it an entertaining read too.
